Spearheaded by Teesdale and Weardale Search and Mountain Rescue Team and Farmwatch, the project has applied for ￡6,000 from Durham County Council’s neighbourhood budget.

Along with ￡3,200 of funds from the rescue team, it will see three radio repeater stations being put up to cover the entire Teesdale area.

The rescue team has been active in the area for more than four decades and has 40 volunteer members, of which about half a dozen are located in the Teesdale area.

Rescue team member Adam Hearn says each member has a hand radio but these are only effective over short distances and the reception is at best described as “poor”.
