Man who was in same lock-up seeks action against cops, CID probe

IBRAHIM Hasan Malik, who claims he was in the same police lock-up as Mohammed Hussain Naushad Khan — who died while in police custody on March 17 — has moved Bombay High Court seeking the registration of an offence against six policemen and a probe by Detection Crime Branch of CID.

Malik has alleged that Khan, a driver who resided in Govandi, was brutally beaten by police officers while he was present. Giri said Khan, who was Malik's family friend and lived near his house, had gone to visit him as he was feeling unwell.

While Khan was in Malik's house, six policemen came and handcuffed the two and took them to the police station to conduct an inquiry, Giri said. "We have sought action against six cops. Two of them — constables Dilip Sawant and Sanjay Dehala — have been identified," Giri said.

Sawant and Dehala are facing a departmental inquiry and are under suspension.

Malik has urged the court to direct the Chembur police station to file an FIR against the allegedly errant policemen. Khan is survived by wife Nasrin, three daughters and a son.

The two suspended constables have allegedly claimed that Khan was handcuffed in order to restrain him from hurting himself.
