Approach of Southwest excites tourism officials

As the snow flies, the Portland International Jetport hopes Maine residents will bite on flights to warm destinations in places such as Texas, Florida and New Mexico.
Four months away from its official launch, Southwest Airlines is booking flights out of Portland, and destinations such as Jacksonville, Fla., and Austin, Texas, are popping up on the Portland airport's Facebook page.12-27-southwest-1
The Portland International Jetport is busy promoting the arrival of the popular airline — which starts nonstop service between Portland and Baltimore on April 14.

Greater Portland Convention and Visitors Bureau President and CEO Barbara Whitten said, "I think the better air service into the area, the better service we will have as far as visitors coming to our area from all over the world."
But why Portland, when other similar-sized markets failed to make the cut in the AirTran acquisition?
