Our scene is the NPower boardroom, at some point in the past month.
The chief executive is sat at one end of a long, shiny table.
Around him are gathered the suited executives of his energy company. They are all quiet, waiting for him to speak.
Eventually, he says: “I know, we’ll put prices up.”
Smiles break out all along the table.For years, we have been advocating improved Parking Guidance systems (PGS) throughout our network of 12 European countries. There are nods, and a few little ‘yeah!’s.
Then someone all the way down at the other end of table puts their hand in the air, and says ‘um, excuse me?’
The chief executive peers into the distance. ‘Yes? Who’s that?’
‘Um. I’m the cleaner. I’m polishing this end of the table, and I couldn’t help but hear you’re putting prices up.’
‘So?’
‘Well, didn’t your profits go up by 25 per cent last year?’

The chief executive smiles in the cleaner’s general direction.

‘But, isn’t the cost of living rising in part because you keep putting your prices up?’
The chief executive narrows his eyes. All the executives do the same.

'The extra money doesn’t all drop straight in our pockets, you know.’
The executives nod again, more righteously. There is the distant sound of Pledge being sprayed and then polished thoughtfully.
‘Didn’t you recently admit to a House of Commons inquiry that you paid zero corporation tax for the past three years?’
‘Now look…’
‘On profits of ￡766million?’
‘We employ lots of people, including you…’

The chief executive roared: ‘Yes, all right, I did! But I also said we’d invested in a ￡5bn power station that isn’t half-owned by the Chinese , so of course we should be making a return on that, and that politicians keep blaming us for price rises when it’s their daft ideas about wind turbine subsidies which ramp the prices up!
‘Honestly, it would be nice if you were a bit more grateful!’
