Police turn heat on auto-lifters

In an attempt to check the rising graph of auto-lifting cases in the city, the cops are tracking around 450 auto-lifters after investigating the interrogation reports of more than 600 auto-lifting cases registered between May 31, 2013 and 2009.

All the 39 police stations have been instructed to search out the whereabouts of the wanted miscreants and ensure their arrest. The areas under focus are Kotwali, Khuldabad, Civil Lines, Attersuiya, Kareli, Colonelganj, Shivkuti, Dhoomanganj, Cantt, Georgetown and Shivkuti police circles. 

Following the specific inputs, cops are checking the current status of the wanted auto-lifters as to whether they are serving their term in jails or have changed their profession and shifted their base to other areas or are still operating in the city.

Men in khaki came across this startling fact after going through interrogation reports and the modus operandi adopted by the auto-lifters to lift vehicles in crowded and deserted locations. The educated young brats with no criminal records, who have joined the gang, have made the task more difficult.

He further added that at present the residential areas were the prime target of the auto-lifters as was reflected in the spate of incidents of the lifting of half-a-dozen two wheelers in Dariyabad locality alone during the last four months. Besides, hospitals, guest houses and local markets have become the other hot destinations of auto-lifters. 

Last year, the police were successful in nabbing over 50 professional auto-lifters and recovered more than a 100 stolen vehicles from their hideouts. Over 916 cases of auto-lifting were registered in the district last year but the recovery rate of stolen vehicles has been very dismal given the fact that hardly 200 have been recovered by the police uptill now.
