Her son returned home on Tuesday night, fearful of returning to custody, she said.

"All I could say to Cameron was, 'you'll just have to face the consequences'. I did hand him in. He was frightened. He didn't know what he was thinking at that stage, he was confused."

On his Facebook page, while on the run, friends posted comments both celebrating and criticising his escape.

He faces dishonesty charges in Hutt Valley, Wellington and Porirua courts and, because he was on the run, he missed an appearance in Porirua - meaning he has racked up additional charges.

However, Reid said her son was not a bad boy; just that he had gone off the rails.
