A passion for chemistry machinery

Andrew Lewis’s keen sense of innovation and his entrepreneurial spirit have transformed the chemistry department’s analytical equipment facility.Caged Laser Engineering, in partnership with Ariel Ltd and Reynolds Technology, aim to investigate the viability of adopting Titanium Tube as a cost effective raw material for the manufacturing of spaceframe assemblies for low volume and small series production lightweight vehicles.

Under his watch it has become an internationally competitive laboratory where professors, students and external clients can inexpensively run experiments and quickly advance their research.

Lewis, who is director of the department’s magnetic resonance spectroscopy and mass spectrometry facilities, is the 2012 winner of SFU’s Staff Achievement Award for Innovation.

While Lewis has a PhD in chemistry, his passion is operating, maintaining and purchasing the sophisticated machinery chemists use for analysis.

“By directly approaching potential customers and making our existing facilities attractive to commercial laboratories, he has overseen a seven-fold improvement in income from external sources,” says one nominator. “This has dramatically reduced costs for departmental users and has funded repairs and maintenance costs.”

Lewis spends much of his time networking and building relationships with suppliers and potential customers for the department’s instrumentation facilities.
