Area remembers prominent businessman

Dubey, who participated in Rotary, choir, golf and did business over the years with Shetler, said he originally met Shetler because of his involvement in Blue Water Thumb Youth for Christ (YFC).

There are times in this line of work that you begin to wonder if you are making a difference and sometimes all it would take was a kind word from Lyle to realize that you were. He was very encouraging with words of appreciation for what we’re doing. That’s just the kind of guy that he was.”

Shetler also was active in, and past president of, the Michigan Plumber’s and Mechanical Contractor’s Association, Gideons, Rotary Club of Pigeon, Pigeon Community Men’s Chorus and Michigan Avenue Mennonite Church in Pigeon.

Also, Shetler absolutely loved to golf.

“He loved to golf,” said son Kent Shetler, who was Lyle’s partner for 30 years during Wednesday Night Men’s League at Scenic Golf Course. “We won the league a few years ago and he was very proud of that. He was also proud of the four hole-in-ones that he had in his career. He golfed all over the world — that was probably what he liked to do best. He was very competitive and liked to win, but he also liked to have fun.”

Shetler helped put on the Farmer’s Festival Golf Tournament for the past 27 years with Mike LePage, EVP of Retail Banking at Thumb National Bank and Pigeon Village president.
