The developer said ahead of this week’s AWEA Offshore 2013 conference in Rhode Island that it expects to complete environmental permitting and wrap up financing for the 18MW demo by the end of 2014.
Baryonyx chief development officer Heather Otten told reNews: “Construction could get started in early to mid-2016.”
The project received early-stage US Department of Energy funding and expects to learn in May 2014 whether it wins another $47m for final engineering and construction. The GOWind scheme is located about five miles offshore in relatively shallow state waters of 18 meters and on a uniform sandy seabed. Siemens 6MW direct-drive turbines will be mounted on lattice jacket foundations.
The project will interconnect at an existing 138kV substation on South Padre Island less than a mile from where the transmission cable makes landfall. The beach and near-shore area of the export cable likely will be installed using horizontal directional drilling.

Both Brownsville and the Port of Corpus Christie are accessible for the project.
Baryonyx expects to finalize other contracts by early 2015. The subsea cable will likely be sourced overseas as there are no US manufacturers for the cable lengths required, said Otten.
For installation the developer expects to retrofit an existing jack-up or other vessel already working in the Gulf of Mexico.
Baryonyx is working with a group that financed several European offshore projects and expects to line up an international consortium of investors.
The developer also is in discussion with potential offtakers. Natural gas prices have driven down electricity prices in Texas’ ERCOT market so the project could end up with a mix of a power purchase agreement, merchant market sales and an agreement with an industrial user, said Otten.
